Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) decided to run for president in 2028. In light of another DSA-backed candidate defeating an incumbent Democratic candidate in the Colorado primary elections, “MS NOW Reports” host Antonia Hylton asked Gordillo if his organization had begun any work on the 2028 presidential election. “I think that we will be trying to influence the next presidential primary,” Gordillo answered. “And it’s still too soon to say how … to say who.” He added, “You know, I think that many in the organization would be very thrilled if Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez ended up running, but ultimately that’s her decision, and we’ll be in conversation.” Fox News Digital reached out to Ocasio-Cortez’s office for comment. Democrats are grappling with the success of left-wing candidates and the party’s midterm messaging as Republicans pounce on recent wins. A week after a pair of Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) candidates won their congressional primaries in New York and unseated five-term Rep. Adriano Espaillat (D-N.Y.), democratic socialist Melat Kiros defeated 15-term Rep. Diana DeGette (D-Colo.) in a Denver primary on Tuesday. It’s the latest sign of the so-called Mamdani effect — named after New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani — with DSA candidates gaining ground this cycle in some deep blue, urban areas. But Republicans have quickly labeled the wins as a sign that the far left is taking over the Democratic brand, and President Trump has painted the opposition party as dangerous “communists” as the midterms approach — while Democrats have been trying to focus on affordability and capitalize on Trump’s poor approval numbers. Meanwhile, the DSA is already looking beyond New York and Colorado to primaries that could offer more tests of strength for the progressive movement in Michigan, Wisconsin and Florida this summer.
