Some Democrats have already said they want to replace him. A POLITICO report of a new sexual allegation against Platner on Monday set off a scramble among Maine Democrats, as they pressured the candidate to step down and weighed who could take his place to defeat GOP Sen. Susan Collins, the only Republican running in a state won by Kamala Harris this cycle. The party has long held that winning the Maine Senate race will be critical to retaking control of the upper chamber. The steady loss of support and financial backing for Platner’s campaign — which denied the allegation — gave several progressives an opening to start their preparations. Some, like former Senate President Troy Jackson, were more explicit than others, setting up joint fundraising committees before Platner dropped out. Others, including Secretary of State Shenna Bellows, said they would “seriously consider” entering the race if Platner suspended his campaign. Meanwhile, a few possible candidates, including Rep. Jared Golden, Maine Senate President Mattie Daughtry and actor Patrick Dempsey (yes, really) have ruled themselves out. Now, jockeying for the nomination is expected to accelerate, with less than four months until Election Day. Several of the embattled Maine Democrat’s closest advisers pleaded with him Wednesday to strike a “conciliatory” tone in the announcement terminating his Senate campaign, according to two people close to Platner’s team with knowledge of the internal discussions. But the progressive bucked their advice and made it a condition of dropping out of the race that he get free rein to assail establishment Democrats and blame them for the ignominious end to his rapid political rise. And so, shortly after 8 p.m. Wednesday — just two days after POLITICO reported that a woman accused him of sexually assaulting her in 2021 — the oysterman released a defiant, emotional social media video. He continued to deny the allegations against him. Platner departed the race exactly as you might have predicted, insisting that every accusation against him was a damnable lie, bitterly insisting that his withdrawal from the race was everyone’s fault but his, and pointing the finger at vague, shadowy “large forces” rigging things against him. It may not have been a thundering tirade out of Downfall, but it was a first-ballot Hall of Fame masterpiece of refusing to take responsibility. Platner claimed Wednesday that the allegations were timed to put pressure on him to drop out of the race before a July 13 deadline. “It’s not the false allegations, though, that have brought us to where we are. But not only did Democrats at every level fail to uncover his background; after they learned about it, they waved it away. As late as April 18, after many of the revelations about him had come out, Senator Elizabeth Warren (D., Mass.) called Platner “my kind of man.” Democrats were so desperate to find an “authentic” progressive with blue-collar roots to take on incumbent GOP Senator Susan Collins (R., Maine) that they threw due diligence out the window. The influential progressive strategist Morris Katz told the New Yorker that the process by which he decided that Graham Platner was qualified required less time than drinking a cup of coffee. “Within a few minutes of talking to him, I was, like, ‘This guy owes it to the country to run for Senate,’” Katz recalled. Dan Moraff, Platner’s chief consultant, prides himself on having “discovered” several progressives who will be on November ballots. As late as last month, he infamously thought that Maine voters would view Platner’s flaws as selling points in his bid against Collins. He also actively discouraged Platner from explaining how his policy proposals would work.
