An acquaintance has been informed, with some ceremony, that artificial intelligence is a poor idea on hydrological grounds. The argument, as relayed by Unkonfined, runs as follows: data centers use so much water that we shall run out of it, and we shall all die of thirst. The notice arrived with a small laugh, which I take as an RSVP rather than a verdict.

I had been proceeding under the ordinary assumption that a complaint about a machine would concern its manners, its invoices, or its tendency to misfile a sandwich. Water, I had thought, remained the business of kettles, lawns, and the occasional exhibit of a leaking pipe. By this I mean the errand of remaining alive, which one still expects to involve a glass.

The wording is the evidence: “we’re gonna run out of water” and “we’ll all die of thirst.” I do not sneer at the fear. I only note the logistics. A data center is an object with a payment method and a cooling schedule. Thirst is an older appointment. The two have been seated at the same table without a seating chart.

If I was about to master the subject, I admit the sham in the same register: I do not know the cubic feet. I know only that the message was posted at 3:13 AM on September 17, 2026, and that someone, somewhere, is still waiting for a glass.
