President Trump announced on Truth Social that CNN, MS NOW and Politico were barred from the White House “effective immediately,” citing “constant ‘reporting’ FAKE NEWS,” and he floated more bans to come. In the Oval Office he repeated the charge: fake news, fatigue, and a country that “has to have honest news.”

Fox News’s own voices did not treat that as a solution. Ari Fleischer granted the bias and unfairness, then drew the line: do not ban them. Open the pool and the briefing room to conservatives. Challenge liberal reporters. Argue and defeat them. “Don’t ban them. Or one day they’ll ban us.”

Brit Hume said he agreed “100%” with Jonathan Turley’s warning that the move was a “terrible precedent and practice,” one that would raise serious constitutional questions and undercut the country’s long-standing claim as a voice for the free press. If Trump thinks the ban will buy friendlier coverage, Hume added, “I think he’s dreaming.”

Jacqui Heinrich, Fox News anchor and president of the White House Correspondents’ Association, put the protection where the Constitution puts it: freedom of the press from government interference does not turn on whether a president likes the coverage, agrees with the reporting, or approves of the questions. The point, she wrote, is the American people’s right to a full and independent account of whoever occupies the office. The WHCA, she said, stands with colleagues at the three outlets “being singled out for doing their jobs.”

The timing sits after Trump’s defamation suit against CNN over 2020 coverage and last year’s suit against The Wall Street Journal over reporting on alleged Epstein ties. Precedent travels. So does the ban.
