The record of the present administration on artificial intelligence is already visible in the ordinary accounts of the country. A million jobs have attached themselves to the build-out. Retirement balances have risen some twelve percent this year on the back of capital expenditure and the productivity that follows it. America is re-industrializing, and for the first time in a generation large private capital has returned to power generation and the grid. In rural Richland Parish, Louisiana, data-center tax receipts have just paid teachers fifty-thousand-dollar bonuses.

The press, meanwhile, continues to treat the technology as a menace. Polls therefore report that people “don’t like AI.” Their actual conduct reports something else. These products have been adopted faster than the internet or the iPhone. Citizens use the tools, take the jobs, and accept the tax base.

President Trump has seen this media cycle before and declines the pause that Senators Sanders and Warren demand. A pause would not make the country safer. It would surrender the frontier to China—an outcome that would be a disaster for the American economy and for national security.
