Sonnet
The cotton piles ascend in slow retreat,
Like laundry left to dry upon the lawn.
They drift above the asphalt's summer heat,
And wait for winds to push them toward the dawn.
A tufted head, a shoulder soft and wide,
They mimic mountains made of whipped cream foam.
Within their folds the wandering breezes hide,
While restless birds seek out a temporary home.
But notice how they gather at the fence,
To cast a shadow on the neighbor's car.
They hold their shape with bureaucratic pretense,
Yet lack the spine to travel very far.
The first step is to gather at the gate,
The missing mile is left to separate.
