Researchers at the University of Hong Kong (HKU) have developed a new type of brain-inspired electronic hardware that can operate at temperatures close to absolute zero. The breakthrough could help address one of the biggest challenges facing quantum computing while also opening new possibilities for future deep-space missions. The work was carried out by scientists from HKU’s Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering within the Faculty of Engineering and the Centre for Advanced Semiconductors and Integrated Circuits (CASIC). Their newly developed programmable neuromorphic platform functions in extremely cold environments and could provide a practical way to improve the scalability of quantum computers. Brain-Inspired Computing at Near Absolute Zero The research team, led by Professor Yuhao Zhang and PhD student Xin Yang, found a new method for creating and controlling negative differential resistance (NDR) in industry-standard Silicon Carbide (SiC) MOSFETs. Using this approach, they demonstrated for the first time that a single transistor can reproduce the energy-efficient “spiking” activity seen in biological neurons at temperatures as low as 10 mK. The ground was covered in thousands of raised, honeycomb shaped polygons stretching for meters across the terrain. This crater sits on the slopes of Mount Sharp within Gale Crater, near the Martian equator. By planetary standards, Antofagasta is geologically young. Scientists estimate it is less than 50 million years old. This young age makes it scientifically valuable because the surrounding rocks have spent less time exposed to the harsh, organic. molecule-destroying radiation that bathes the Martian surface. Any preserved organic chemistry nearby is more likely to remain intact. On the way to the crater, Curiosity’s path crossed terrain showing a feature called boxwork. Let’s start with the positives. Gemini integrates with many different apps and services, has solid web search capabilities, and offers a fairly wide context window. That said, I personally prefer the way Claude responds. It nails a vibe that floats between being too clinical and too much of a “buddy”, and it is much better at tracking long conversations. I also found that in fictional projects, Gemini tended to completely forget core characters and places long before it became an issue for Claude. If it were just based on how well each model responds, I’d ditch Gemini for Claude once again. Unfortunately, it’s not as simple as that. The truth is that Gemini is a much better value for my needs. It was only two months ago that Anthropic announced Mythos Preview, a model that they said was too dangerous to make publicly available, thanks in particular to its advanced cybersecurity capabilities. Then, two months later, the company publicly released Fable, a version of Mythos with various safety guardrails. Fable is, in my limited experience, a very impressive model. It’s increasingly difficult to objectively evaluate models for anything other than coding performance, but there is subjective feel, and I found my interactions with Fable to be extremely impressive; it made other models, including GPT 5.5 and Opus 4.8, feel small and dumb. The two times I felt that way previously were with GPT-4 and Grok 4, both of which represented new generations in terms of base model size and complexity; my sense is that Fable is downstream of a new pre-train and the first of a new generation. To that end, I can certainly buy the case that Fable/Mythos is in fact more capable when it comes to identifying and exploiting security issues, and that Anthropic’s cautious roll-out was justified. The problem with publicly releasing models, however, is that guardrails can be jailbroken, and apparently that is exactly what happened shortly after the release. ANTHROPIC VS. THE U.S. GOVERNMENT, AGAIN What happened next is somewhat unclear.
