NOAA issued an El Niño advisory on Thursday and predicts that San Diego will experience some of the most significant impacts during the winter months. In the meantime, NOAA also forecasted a 63% chance of a “super” El Niño developing. “San Diego is really going to be at the forefront of El Niño because we see the impacts from the south and the north,” said Serge Dedina, the executive director of Wildcoast. El Niño forms when temperatures in the Pacific near the equator stay above 0.5°C for several consecutive months. “The heat in terms of what we’re mainly going to feel is translated to rainfall,” said San Diego State geology professor Patrick Abbott. Dedina added, like El Niños in the past, that could bring more tropical species north to San Diego. “We saw whale sharks off the coast of San Diego, hammerhead sharks, and all the sport fishermen are happy because you get these tropical species,” Dedina said. The weather event also increases the potential for damaging storms. El Niño suppresses hurricane development in the Atlantic and enhances tropical development in the eastern and central Pacific, where Abbott says about 15% of the world’s hurricanes develop. “We focus on the Atlantic because they hit us the hardest, but there’s more of them in the Pacific, and with an El Niño, our odds go up that more of those are liable to come up and bring their energy to us,” Abbott said. But in reality, scientists have to sift through hundreds or thousands of calculations and simulations for months or years. In an effort to reduce this burden, some scientists have turned to AI—but, as a new study finds, the pros and cons are quite nuanced. In a study published earlier this month in the Journal of Cosmology and Astroparticle Physics, cosmologists trained an AI neural network on simulations of ΛCDM—the standard model of cosmology (hereafter the standard model). Then, the team tested whether this pre-training would help or hurt the AI’s subsequent investigations into other outstanding problems in cosmology and astrophysics. Although the AI did show some promise, it developed biases that ended up being detrimental to finding new physics. “[The] study is a reminder that acceleration and understanding have to go together.” The study is a “nice example of how AI can help science move faster when it is used in a structured way,” Adrian E.
