Clueless AI CEOs Still Baffled Why Everybody’s So Mad About AI All the Time
Lesson
Hostility here is class-and-material, not Musk-riddle. The piece names the public’s verdict first (exhausted, slop, data-center intrusion), then isolates executives as the last people who “haven’t caught on.” “Trust” is mocked as a subjective trick that “razzle-dazzle” can fix. Zuckerberg’s long essay is framed as spew and tedium; an internal CTO put-down is used as hypocrisy that “betrays” the leisure promise. Amodei’s caution is recoded as publicity-seeking, then stacked with Claude-and-war, cancer-promise crumbs, fruit smut as the only use case, and a triad of persistent harms (smog on poor Black communities, children’s brains, deadly war). The closer denies agency: they must plow ahead because the economy is leveraged. Sanctimony is wit: skip the ads, ease off AI.
Key concepts in this module
- Last-to-know elite: everyone got the memo except the people holding the cards
- Trust as vapor: recode structural critique as a branding problem
- Essay as spew: length and optimism become moral defects
- Hypocrisy splice: public leisure claim vs. internal “ask your parents”
- Cautious-skepticism as costume: ethics talk = chasing good publicity
- Crumbs-for-harms bargain: cancer pitch as buying patience
- Use-case collapse: best real-world case reduced to fruit smut
- Harm persistence: even a miracle does not cancel smog, kids, war
- Forced plow-ahead: economy leverage as proof they cannot choose decency
Structural tensions
- Public “hatred” is treated as unanimous while sourcing political memos and financier anxiety
- Amodei is both not-the-cause of backlash and still morally on the hook for war use
- “Ease off AI” is prescribed in the same breath as “they have no choice”
- Material harms are asserted as permanent regardless of any benefit threshold
- Wired is used as authority for the out-messaging claim while the desk still owns the sneer
Craft techniques
- Open by diagnosing the industry’s proposed fix as feel-good razzle-dazzle, not a policy reply.
- Sequence “everyone heard” (strategists, financiers) then isolate CEOs as the sole clueless bloc with power.
- Downgrade the target’s key noun (“trust”) to an entirely subjective, easily gamed concept.
- Weaponize word-count and tone (tedious 6,500-word essay, spew, honeyed words) as character evidence.
- Cross-cut a CEO’s leisure utopia with a subordinate’s recorded scolding of workers asking for time off.
- Reframe rival “caution” as a publicity costume, then attach a government-war use case as the real product.
- Translate benefit-talk into “crumbs for patience,” then undercut with a deliberately unserious best-use-case.
- Declare harms immortal: even the requested miracle would leave pollution, child harm, and war intact.
- Close with structural fatalism: public be damned because the whole economy is already leveraged.
Open questions
- How does the desk treat a CEO who agrees with the material critique rather than “trust”?
- When does citing a competitor or sibling outlet become laundering the sneer?
- What epithet set applies when the lab is Anthropic-shaped, not Musk-shaped?
- Can “no choice but to plow ahead” ever be allowed as tragedy instead of indictment?
Spine update
House style now has two engines: founder-as-broken-English (prior layer) and CEO-class-as-last-to-know. Messaging is always razzle-dazzle; trust is vapor; long optimism is spew; internal HR cruelty falsifies public utopia; safety branding is a costume until a war or smut use-case is stacked. Benefits are crumbs; harms are immortal; the economy’s leverage proves they will not stop. Hostility still performs as common-sense exhaustion, not a technical counter-model—failure, ick, and adjacency remain cosmic unfitness, now distributed across a whole C-suite rather than one man.
Next suggested layer
A piece that has to handle a non-Musk lab’s coherent safety-race or “we haven’t delivered” admission without the incomprehensibility opener—how epithets and leak-vs-confession work when the target already concedes backlash.
