More seriously, I find the concepts of ‘positive politeness’ and ‘negative politeness’ as related to space and set out by the anthropologist, Kate Fox, very compelling here.
Positive politeness - friendliness, hospitality, referring to people as ‘sir’ or ‘ma’am’, offering assistance, smiling, making direct eye contact, speaking directly, showing an interest in others etc.
Negative politeness - consideration, quietness, making efforts not to intrude on others, respecting privacy, apologising before speaking to someone or moving close by them to indicate that you will not intrude, avoiding direct eye contact, avoidance of directly confrontational or interrogatory language e.g., not “I am pissed off that you did that” but “I’m surprised you decided to do that” not “No, I don’t want to do that” but “Could do?” or “That’s a possibility” in a doubtful tone of voice. Not “What is your name?” but “Hello, I’m Helen.” Not “What do you do?” but something like “Do you work in the city?” There’s nothing ambiguous about any of that because everyone knows what it means but it enables back-tracking or escape. Negative politeness.
Fox and other anthropologists looking at this have found that Brits and Americans differ widely in this regard with Americans having a very positive mode of politeness and the English a particularly negative one. Australians too have a much more positive mode. This despite all those nations having a shared cultural background. The country which is most like England is Japan despite having no shared culture. This suggests that it is environmental and negative politeness is a product of living on a densely populated island. Manners are about giving each other psychological space where there is not much physical space. Humans in large, more sparsely populated countries can and possibly need to signal friendliness, care and cooperation in more overt ways.
I find this all fascinating.
Canadians appear to buck this trend, however, having a culture that is more reserved and apologetic like the English while having lots of space. The Canadians remain inexplicable in so many ways. 🇨🇦😘
Edit: I play a game with myself whenever I get a flight to the US. I try to guess who is American and who is English (remembering that I am travelling from London which is particularly negative in its politeness) by subtly observing their body language and then award myself points if I hear them speak. I have a very high success rate. Americans are likely to have a more relaxed jaw and open expression and they allow their eyes to wander over others’ faces without embarrassment. The English tend to clench their jaws more tightly, have more impassive expressions and immediately look away if they happen to look at me while I am looking at them (as do I).
In another life, I would have loved to be an anthropologist of this kind of thing.
