I’ve been trying to figure out what I (and so many others) dislike about AI writing. It’s always clear, which is important to me. It’s good at getting the level right, not going over the reader’s head but not talking down. Often it’s clever, and sometimes even funny. (At least Claude Opus/Fable is.) In a narrow technical sense, it is good writing. So why are long passages so unpleasant to read?
I read an answer in the Notes that rings true. (Sorry, I’d love to cite it, but can’t find it—Substack needs a better search function.) The problem is that it tries too hard. It’s eternal clickbait; every sentence is trying to get you to read further—as in the classic AI tic, “It’s not X … it’s Y!” Good writers do this too, but carefully, in small doses. AI lacks the confidence to step back and let the ideas engage the reader. Its motto is Always Be Closing, and the effect is cloying. It’s a strange thing to say about AI writing, but it’s too needy to be enjoyable.
