In my opinion, music and all the other artistic mediums, are dependent on the judgment of taste for the person experience such art. A human painter creates a piece that provokes emotion to the experiencing viewer, so it evokes and depends on the judgement of the human. Thus judgement is linked to our sensory system, and the AI is not able to smell, see or hear like a human. So in that sense, it will never achieve any sort of erudit musical creation, at least not from an artistical point of view.
However, it can mimic patterns. So based on the patters the AI can analyze, it can discern the patterns we like and, thus, mimic variations of those patterns which we will tend to enjoy as an artform. It will probably me achieving a place where it can write in counterpoint, or music similar to Bach which we can’t discern if it is Bach or not. But, and this is the crucial point, it will not be able to create something new because it heard something that provoked a certain emotion, no matter what aspect of the music we are talking about.
Honestly, I think AI will be able to analyze the patterns and even help us understand the mind of Bach, but it will never be able to be a Bach when it comes to music composition, because it can’t comprehend our sensorial and emotional response to art, because art is created with the intention of provoking such human aspects.
